In New Zealand, the average family throws away three shopping carts full of old food per year, meaning that over a third of the roadside bin collection is food waste and it’s all heading into our landfill.

That adds up to about 157,389 tonnes of food waste a year which is a massive amount.

There are a few types of food that are being thrown away regularly, these include bread, apples, bananas, potatoes and lettuce.

Most of the food we throw away is due to the food expiring or it consists of food vegetable scraps like peelings and stalks.

To improve this large food waste problem, the Auckland council is offering free compost courses across Auckland this month, that you can head along to and learn how to start your own compost bin.

Not only will you gain a new skill but if everyone starts a compost bin, we can start decreasing the large amount of food waste going into landfill. Which means the food scraps are no longer going to waste, but are helping the environment.

Help New Zealand get one-third of the food waste down by taking your vegetable scraps and composting them instead!
